I just like being there! It’s not so much because I can make money accepting jobs to write blog posts, though that is certainly a huge perk. I swear, I think it’s because of the color scheme! There’s something about that shade of yellow that makes me happy and makes me want to hang around. And then I notice how nicely the red goes with the yellow…and then the blackish gray color pulls it all together. It dawns on me that this color scheme is perfect for SocialSpark! The red and yellow are flame colors while the gray is ashes!! It also dawns on me that I have probably had way too many Mountain Dews this evening….

Seriously, when I received my invite to check out SocialSpark, I was very excited. After visiting every nook and cranny at the site, I’ve decided that it really is a neat place! Not only is the color scheme nice, but the site is very easy to navigate which is a big deal to me. If I am at a site that is just a smidge bit difficult, or cumbersome to navigate, I won’t stick around. SocialSpark did not let me down.

There are several things I like about SocialSpark. I love the profiles and all of the info they contain. It is super easy to read about other bloggers and even easier to add them as friends and visit their blogs. Here are two screenshots from my account. The first one is my personal profile. See the red and yellow? Nice, huh? If you read my profile, you’ll find out my interests, education, how many props I’ve been given plus much more. Over in the sidebar, you can see a screenshot and a link to my blog. There is also a section for my most recent post.

jennyprofile.jpg

Here’s the bottom part of my Profile Screen. This is where you can see all of my friends( Jenn and I just became friends!) and read comments that they have left for me. See my comment section? See how it is empty? Sad…

jennyfriends1.jpg

Another thing I like about SocialSpark is the statistics that are available to both bloggers and advertisers. Here’s a screenshot of my Stats section. You can view my Real Rank, Alexa, Page Views and Visitors. One quick glance tells me what I might need to start focusing on more…traffic!

jennystats.jpg

Not only is SocialSpark easy to use, but I also have the opportunity to communicate with the advertiser and share with them why I could write a great post for them. For example, I sign into my account and see that there is an opp for nasogastric tubes and I also notice that my blog does not qualify because the advertiser is looking for medical related blogs. Even though my blog is not medical related, I feel that I would be able to write a great post about this topic because I had a son who had a nasogastric tube that I was responsible for taking care of and replacing when he pulled it out. I can ask the advertiser for a slot on this job based on this information. Of course, the advertiser can give me the job or not, but I like that I can at least communicate in situations like this.

Now, I’ve shared only a small bit of info about SocialSpark so you’ll definitely want to head on over there and check things out for yourself. Again, I have been really pleased with my SocialSpark experience and I look forward to making new friends, discovering new blogs, and, of course, making some more money!

Heard ‘Round the House

Apr-29-2008 By jdoriot

Remember that catchy tune by Rupert Holmes?  You know the one…where the first line of the chorus says “If you like buying chihuahuas”?  LOL!!

We heard this song last week and the first line actually goes like this:

“If you like Piña Coladas
And getting caught in the rain”

I swear, Belle absolutely slays me with things like this!  She is such a hoot!!  I seriously need to create a list of all the misheard words and her one-liners…

Empty Holster Protest

Apr-27-2008 By jdoriot

So…Pete was telling me about how some students at ETSU wore empty holsters to school this past week. These students were part of the Second National Collegiate Empty Holster Protest and they were protesting the state and school laws that make it illegal to carry a concealed weapon. After the tragedy at Virginia Tech, more and more students are feeling the need to protect themselves and possibly those around them. It all makes sense to me, but it also makes me nervous. I remember my college days and I’m not too sure anyone I knew would have been responsible enough to carry a concealed gun!

Our local newspaper wrote that the university was concerned about how people would react when they saw the empty holsters. What do you think? Would you feel uncomfortable seeing an empty holster? I really think that probably the majority of the students on campus knew about the protest and so they weren’t surprised at all. Something like this protest would have been talked about before the actual protest day.

I asked Pete if he was going to be part of the next protest. He told me he would be if he could find the coolest holster that was ever created! Lol!! So I sent him to look at the Galco holsters. Right now, you get a free mug with your order and free shipping if your order is at least $75. Of course, we don’t even have a gun to put in any of those holsters so I’m not too sure if this would be a wise purchase for us! Lol!! And I just can’t see buying a holster for one protest, can you? Well, maybe if we could figure out a way to turn it into a multi-tasker…..the wheels are turning, folks! Ha!

Visiting THE City

Apr-26-2008 By jdoriot

We love to travel. We have been fortunate enough to fly to American cities that offered plenty of sight seeing opportunities. We have been to Dallas-Fort Worth, the sight of the infamous tore-tulla train (Actually the tarantula train), Orlando to see Disney and Universal Studios, St Thomas and St John ( not really an American city but an US Virgin Island), Atlanta, Charlotte, and Pittsburgh. They all have a lot of interesting sights to see, but we are looking forward to flying to THE American city, Washington DC. We have never been and we would like to take the kids to see all the historical sites and museums. Nik has always expressed an interest in seeing the Smithsonian, and we want to go while they are still young enough where it is not so uncool to be with your parents. We may have already missed the boat with Nik!

If you are thinking about checking out Flights to USA cities, be sure to check out Dialaflight. They have travel consultants that can help you plan out the perfect get away! They can probably help you find some great attractions to visit also!

LifeLock

Apr-24-2008 By jdoriot

Identity theft seems to be rampant right now. Pete and I always joke about someone stealing our identity because the joke would be on them…we have nothing! They would be sorely disappointed if they tried to drain our bank account. I don’t even think that they could open a new credit card using our names. Nonetheless, it could still happen and when we stop and think about that, we realize it’s not so funny after all.

There are several ways to protect yourself from identity theft. There is also a company called lifelock that does all of this for you! With Lifelock, you get proactive identity theft protection, reduced junk mail, reduced credit card offers, plus much more. You get all of these benefits for $10 a month!! Seriously, in this day and age, that just may be a good use of your $10 bill.

Pete and I will certainly be looking into this since the monthly fee is so affordable!

I have always thought these little fairy doors were just wonderful! To find one in real life would be a thrill. There are a lot of crafts people out there that are making them.

Fairy doors are little architectural details that are added to homes, businesses, trees, gardens…where ever you want to add them!   People who believe in fairies believe that the fairies use these doors.  I’m not one of those people but, I still think these doors are absolutely delightful!  Enjoy the link!

Back to School

Apr-23-2008 By jdoriot

I’m going to be a nurse!

Pete and I have been discussing this for some time now and since he will be finishing up his RN degree this December, it’s now time for me to go back to school. Seriously, the nursing benefits such as tuition reimbursement, basic and supplemental life insurance, and great retirement plans make my decision to become a nurse a wise one. Along with all the benefits, there is also a nice, hefty salary (heftier than what I make now! Lol!) and job security.

All that aside, I feel like both Pete and I will enjoy being nurses because we ourselves have been through a huge medical crisis with our son, Gus. We have “been there—done that” and I believe we’ll be able to really serve both the patient and the family.

I’ll be working on my pre-requisites for the next few semesters. My goal, as of now, is to be able to apply for the evenings and weekends nursing school that has just been created. I will take my three pre-reqs and then apply Spring 2009! This will be my second degree and let me tell you, I will certainly be more focused this time around! Lol!!

Doodlebug Designs Spring Special

I’m so excited that my dear friend, Judi, is doing so well with her new blog design business!  I think she creates wonderful designs and I can’t wait for her to finish honing her WordPress coding skills or whatever it is that she needs to do to create smashing WP themes.  When that time comes, I will certainly getting a new look!!

Go check out the gallery over at Doodlebug Designs!

Swingin’

Apr-23-2008 By jdoriot

 monkey-vinyl-swing-set-2320320.jpg

I would love to be able to purchase this set for Isabelle! She would absolutely love the covered areas. I can see her now having tea parties on that upper level. Of course, since swinging is one of her all time favorite things to do, I’m sure any old set would do. I really like the wooden swing sets the best. Though I like this light color, I think a darker color would go better with our house.

Hopefully, when Pete graduates and is a nurse, we can make a purchase like this! I can’t wait!! Isabelle will be thrilled!!

Can’t Kill It!

Apr-23-2008 By jdoriot

fan-flower-scaevola-blue-wonder.jpg

Seriously, folks, this is my all-time favorite thing to plant!  It’s  Scaevola Blue Fan Flower and it can not be killed!!  Trust me…I do not have a green thumb at all and I can keep this plant alive.  It doesn’t take much work at all…if any! lol!!  I plant it in my front bed which gets a ton of direct sunlight.  I hardly ever water it because I forget to do so…yet it still lives on!  I bet if I really loved and nurtured these pretty little Fairy Fans, they would be more bushy and really fill out my front bed.  I don’t see that happening though! So, if you are looking for a strong, hardy plant…be sure to try this one!!

Gardens and Nature Centers

Apr-23-2008 By jdoriot

I’m going to be honest here…I’m not really an outdoors type person. I would much rather be inside where I can control the climate and avoid the bugs! There are, however, always exceptions to the rules: I love to visit gardens and nature centers!

While Gus was in the hospital in Knoxville, we would often go to the local nature center to let the kids explore. Of course, it was hot and there were bugs, but that didn’t seem to matter to me. I think I was just so fascinated by all the flora and fauna that I just ignored all the buzzing. One time, we saw the most beautiful butterflies. That was certainly nice during our time of extreme stress!

Knoxville is not the only place where you can find nature centers. In fact, there are gardens and centers all over the place! One place I read about today is the Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas. This nature center is really neat because it is the first center in Texas to earn the U.S. Green Building Council’s Platinum certification for LEED®-NC which is awarded to projects who have reached the highest green building and performance measures. At Shangri La, you will find over 300 different plants in five outside rooms and four sculpture rooms. I love how gardens like Shangri La arrange their plants in outside rooms! I wish I could pull that off in my back yard!

Just like in Knoxville, this nature center has a nice array of programs for local students, teachers and the general public. Of course, this week the Shangri La folk are celebrating Earth Week with daily programs for the public. In November, the center hosts an Orchid Walk where people can go to the wetland area and make note of the different orchids. I would love to do that…very neat!

So, if you are into nature centers and gardens like me, you may want to plan a trip to Orange, Texas! Maybe Pete can take a travel nurse job in the area and we can relocate there for a few months! That would be completely cool!!

Seven Favorite Contests #2

Apr-22-2008 By jdoriot

All of these contests were listed at the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival!!  Well, I take that back…I don’t believe the Magic Bullet Contest is listed there…I came across that over the weekend.  These are only a few of the neat contests.  If you decide to visit the carnival, make sure you have some time and lots of snacks because you’ll be busy for awhile!  I promise you’ll get sucked in!!

  • Magic Bullet Platinum Pro…Who doesn’t want a Magic Bullet??! My boys would title me “Mom of the Year” if I were to win this! lol!
  • Marimekko Coin Purse… I’ve been wanting anything Marimekko for some time now so I love this giveaway!
  • Art Notecards… Lovely designs by Betty Refour!  They really are lovely, I know…I won a set last year!!

My Retirement

Apr-22-2008 By jdoriot

Man, oh, man…we’ve been trying to get the boys to play golf for years…only so we can be set for retirement! No takers though…until today. Now, the boys are still not interested, but Belle asked today when she could go golfing! Seriously, I think we need to buy her this very cool pink golf club set, some golf balls and some neat little girl golf clothes and head on out to the course before she changes her mind! I really want to be rolling in the dough when we retire! You never know, it could happen! lol!!

Walnut Easter Bread

Apr-22-2008 By jdoriot

101_5063.JPG

I know, I know…it’s way past Easter and I’m still posting about it!  What else can I say other than I’m way behind! lol!!  Anyway, this is my version of Walnut Easter Bread.  It looks wonky but had a really nice taste.  I am brand new at baking bread and would love any advice/suggestions/tips on how to make this bread prettier.  How do I keep my twist together and what about the blackened walnuts?  Should I have made a aluminum foil tent to cover the bread at the end of the baking…what?  I would love to start making this every Easter…but only if I can make it lovely!

Swap Day!

Apr-22-2008 By jdoriot

I am really excited because our homeschool co-op swap day is coming up Friday! I always find the neatest things at these swaps: old sweaters for yarn, vintage tupperware canisters and a pair of neat little white sandals are just a few of the things I’ve found. Seriously, this is a great swap…much better than some of the yard sales around here that have been advertised as being “HUGE” with tons of stuff. One of these “HUGE” sales I went to a few years ago only had shower stools for sale! It was at a retirement home…I guess that should’ve been a clue, right?!

Anway, I’m getting really excited about this upcoming swap. I’ll be sure to post my finds!

Strawberry Goodness!

Apr-18-2008 By jdoriot

I really don’t have a sweet tooth, but this dessert I made awhile back was pretty good. So good that I ended up eating the majority of it…yep, I didn’t share much of it all! Lol!! Seriously, after several days of munching on it, I just knew I was going to need lap band surgery, anoretix or a life-time membership to Curves.

101_5069.JPG

Belle and I worked together to make the shortbread. It was a tad bit dry so I’ll probably look for a new shortbread recipe to try. You know, sometimes it takes many different recipes to find just the right one. Fortunately, my kids love to cook so it will be fun testing all the different recipes.

In our first attempt, there were three layers of shortbread and the cream was made from cream cheese, milk, vanilla and Splenda. Seems like there was one more ingredient, but I’ve lost the recipe so I’m not sure. When I searched “Strawberry Shortbread” there were a gazillion results so there’s tons to choose from. If you find a good, let me know!

Goodbye, GreenBoy….

Apr-17-2008 By jdoriot

First it was Buster. And then, a few days later, it was GreenBoy…

It’s taken me awhile to post about it because I couldn’t find the pictures until just a few minutes ago…how could I post about GreenBoy if I had no photos, ya know? lol!!

101_5147.JPG

101_5148.JPG

And, yes I cried when GreenBoy left. I’m just like that…very sentimental. GreenBoy had served us well and had gone until he could go no more. Of course, we have a new van now and I’m bonding quite quickly with it…the “Red Butt Warmer” is what we’ve named our new van. You’ll have to come back for that story! lol!!

Bonny Kate Cafe

Apr-17-2008 By jdoriot

Pete and I were out driving around this evening and we noticed that someone has opened up a little cafe right beside the Bonny Kate Theater!

It must be brand spankin’ new because we were in there over Christmas break and things looked a little shabby. Pete and I had been sent over there to wrangle the kids (including our two boys) who were acting in the Community Theater’s Christmas play.

I told Pete that the area would make a neat coffee house. Apparently, someone else thought it would be a good idea too! It’s very quaint…kind of dark and romantic. The only thing that kind of bothers me is that there are a lot of pipes on the ceiling and the building itself is very old. Yes, that’s what gives the space a neat look and feel, but I wonder about asbestos?? I mean really, I think I’d like to go eat there but not if I run the risk of being exposed to asbestos and developing lung cancer or mesothelioma, ya know?! I know, I know, I’d have to eat there an awful lot to run that risk, but still, if asbestos is there, I’d rather just go eat at McDonalds! But wait…that may be just as bad as asbestos exposure! lol!!

What’s the latest on asbestos removal and containment? I know there for awhile, there were a lot of reports about schools finding asbestos, but I’ve not heard of anything lately. Do you think the cafe would have to have all that checked before opening?? What’s the law today?

Book Challenge Dropout

Apr-17-2008 By jdoriot

Yep! That would be me!~

I have joined a lot of book challenges over the past several years and I’ve worked hard to prepare my lists for all these different challenges. Now, I’m a list-maker so this is always an extreme thrill for me to compile these lists.

This year, however, I keep finding other books that I want to read instead of the ones on my lists! I swear, I seem to be finding the neatest books in the neatest places like the free bin at our local used book store! I keep telling myself that it’s perfectly ok to read something not on one of the lists…I mean really, what’s gonna happen?? Still yet, I have those lists and if I don’t complete them…well…bleh! You see where this is going, right?

So, this weekend, I’m dropping out of all the book challenges I have listed in my sidebar. All those titles will be gone. I will instead start a new list: “2008 Books” or something similar and more creative if I can think of something…don’t get your hopes up. I’m really looking forward to tackling my yearly reading goal(50 books per year) by creating this new list. I will, of course, keep all my lists because there are a lot of those books I still want to read…just not within a time frame.

So there…I’m a dropout!! And I’m already feeling less stress, thank you very much!!

The Exchange

Apr-17-2008 By jdoriot

High school band was a lot of fun for me! I loved going to all the different band clinics and meeting others who were interested in playing music. I remember getting so nervous when we would stand in a circle and go around, one at a time, and play different scales. This “tryout” was done to determine which band we would be in: red, white or blue band. Of course, everyone made new friends at these clinics and when the weekend was over, a bunch of addresses were exchanged and people promised to stay in touch…especially the guys and gals!

During my junior year, someone discovered that we could get business cards printed up to exchange with each other. Now, these weren’t the usual cards. We got the opportunity to design business cards that were appealing to teens. They were printed with really neat designs and had our name, address and phone number printed on them…that’s it. The graphics were fun, bright and very teen oriented. You could order a box of 100 from the local card shop for next to nothing. Now, you can design and print business cards (and more!) so much quicker by using VistaPrint. I’m sure it’s much faster to order online than to have to wait for the card shop order. I remember being very impatient back then…it seemed to take forever to get that call from the store.

Anyway, we had a blast exchanging cards and we felt soooo cool! I’m sure we looked so completely silly! Lol!!

Seven Favorite Contests

Apr-16-2008 By jdoriot

Here are a few of my favorite contests I’ve stumbled upon while out and about surfing. Enjoy and I hope you win something…did I just say that?! lol!!

  • DK Publishing: BUTTERFLY Book…I have always loved DK Publishing books so when I saw this contest I was really excited! I think Isabelle would love it if I won this. Five copies are being given away! Cool Beans!
  • 30 Lolly Dollars… You’ll find lots of neat things for your home over at Lolly Jane Boutique! I love the chore boards and the “est. family” boards. I’ve been wanting an “est. family” sign forever so hopefully I’ll win this one!
  • Recycled Notecard Set…This is a completely neat set from Peez & Ques! All the notecards are made with bits and pieces of scrap papers and they are so cool! Recycled Rocks!!
  • SIGG Water Bottle.…I have tried to win these bottles several times so I hope this is finally “my time”. I promise to drink more water if I win! lol!!

Second Spectacles

Apr-16-2008 By jdoriot

I love my new glasses. I need to take a new photo of me wearing them so I can create a new avatar. Mine is soooo outdated now that I have my “more hip” glasses!

I wanted to get two pairs of glasses so I would have a back up pair in case my main ones broke. I was miserable this past time when I was waiting on my glasses to come in….I could see well enough, but I maintained a pretty good headache due to eye strain.

When we were shopping for the frames, we realized quickly that two pairs would not be happening because they are so expensive. There were no cheap eyeglasses in the building. Really, I don’t need anything fancy for my second pair, you know?

And I’m not even going to get started on the sunglasses! Those frames were so incredibly expensive. One pair was $200 more than my glasses! I just can’t believe people pay that much for frames. I think I’ll look online for frames that fit better in my budget. I think all I need is a prescription and the measurement between pupils…that sounds easy enough!

Have you ever ordered frames online?? Any tips??

A Few Crab and Some Songs

Apr-16-2008 By jdoriot

Oh man, tonight was a good tv night!!  First, there was American Idol and than afterwards Deadliest Catch.

castroinbluejeans.jpg

I was definetly more excited about the Deadliest Catch season premiere than I was about American Idol.  The fact that the AI people were going to be singing Mariah Carey songs almost made vomit in my mouth.  For some reason, I can’t quite pinpoint it, I loathe Mariah…she is completely irritating to me.  I know everyone loves her, but I think it has something to do with her sqealy, never-ending high notes that slay me.  Seriously, I was not too keen on the idea of hearing her songs.  I couldn’t imagine what in the world Jason Castro would sing, ya know?  Well, he sang something and it sounded pretty good…but I really dig him so I may be a bit biased! lol!!

3-9.jpg

And then the best show…Deadliest Catch came on.  It’s such a repetitive show: drop the pots, pull the pots up, empty the crab, drop the pots again….why, oh why, am I so addicted??  Is it because they censors blow the whistle or bull horn when one of the guys cusses??  Maybe so.  Is it because I love crab?  Maybe so. Is it because I’m impressed with how hard the guys work…do I find it motivating?  Maybe so…I have no idea, but I’m sucked in! lol!!  I’m still rootin’ for Sig and his crew….Phil and his crew are my second choice.

Pope’s Platter Flying First Class

Apr-16-2008 By jdoriot

I was listening to the news this afternoon and I happened to catch a report about the five platters that are being prepared for Pope Benedict XVI. The platters will be representing the different peoples of the United States. What caught my attention was the side story about Rosa A. Saenz. She is the owner of Los Bandidos de Carlos & Mickey’s and will be preparing the “maize platter”. Her restaurant is in El Paso, Texas so the foods for the platter have to be taken to Yonkers, NY.

Of course, this gal is thrilled to be doing this and she and her family have decided that it would be best if they flew the foods up to New York. The foods will be wrapped very well , placed into Tupperware containers and will be flying first class in the overhead stow-away compartment!! I would probably want to do the same thing! I think she needs to buy a special piece of luggage just for the occasion. It would need to be extra-sturdy for added protection of the foods.

If you were flying food to the Pope (or someone else held in high esteem) what would you prepare?

Crockpot Chicken and Potatoes

Apr-15-2008 By jdoriot

I’ve had plans of trying a new recipe weekly, but I keep on forgetting.  A few days ago, I was over at Grandmother Wren’s blog and I read where she is starting to do the same thing…try a new recipe each week!   Her recipe and photo are wonderful.  I’m afraid that I didn’t get a photo taken of this weeks concoction…we ate it too fast!  Everyone loved it and it has been added to my recipe box! It’s a keeper!

I came across this recipe over at This Wasn’t In the Plan.  It’s pretty simple…I can’t believe I’ve not fixed this before! lol!!

Crock Pot Chicken and Potatoes

Chicken Breasts

1 can Cream of Chicken soup

Italian Seasoning

Potatoes

1/4 cup Sour Cream

Slices potatoes and layer in the bottom of the crock pot.  Sprinkle with Italian seasoning.  Add chicken and sprinkle with Italian seasoning.  Add remaining potatoes and sprinkle with seasoning. Top with soup.  Cook on low for 8-10 hours.   Add sour cream during last 30 minutes.

my notes:  I used A LOT of potatoes so next time I’m going to use two cans of soup instead of the one.  Sour cream would have been great but I forgot to add it and it was still very yummy!

Music Throughout Your Home

Apr-14-2008 By jdoriot

Pete and Jake just finished watching Star Wars. I was thinking that it would have been really great to have a Bose home theater …can you imagine how much better the movie would have been?

We saw a Bose demonstration a few years ago and were really impressed. I could not get over how tiny the speakers were that we were shown. I think it would be wonderful to have a really nice sound system for watching movies and piping music throughout our home. I would play soothing music for everyone while we were going to sleep…and then peppy music when we were cleaning. And of course, I would play George Bizet really loud so I could practice singing the Habanera…I’ve almost got it folks! lol!!

Anyway, I think music throughout our home would be lovely. Music adds such ambiance, doesn’t it?  What would you play??

I’m Rootin’ For Jason!

Apr-14-2008 By jdoriot

normal_30747.jpg

So who saw American Idol this past week?? I’ve liked Jason Castro from the beginning and his performance this week made me like him even more. I swear, I’ve never ever even though about buying any of the past Americal Idol contestants’ cds, but I think I would actually buy his!

This past week, Jason sang Israel Kamakawiwo Ole’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and it was just wonderful. Of course, I’m partial to this song because it’s the one I chose to use in …it makes me cry every time I hear it…happy tears, really.

Anyway, I really, really hope Jason wins…

Do You Have These Symptoms?

Apr-14-2008 By jdoriot

I’ve known several people who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. These ladies went through a time where the docs weren’t sure what was going on. Can you imagine how frustrating for these gals?? It would be horrible to be in constant pain and not know what’s wrong with you…and what you can do to ease the pain. I think I would be completely depressed, wouldn’t you?

Here are the symptoms of fibromyalgia:

  • muscle and joint pain
  • fatigue
  • sleep problems
  • body aches
  • reduced ability to exercise
  • chronic facial pains or aches

Well, I’ll have to say that I have most of these fibromyalgia symptoms, but mine is from being chunky, I’m certain! lol!! No seriously, these are serious symptoms and can be very severe…I just thought it would be a good idea to pass these on. I’ve never really taken time to read about fibromyalgia so I never knew the symptoms…now, I’ll know what to look for. Knowledge is power, you know!
